S92A has been scrapped.. that "Prime Minister John Key has announced that the government will throw out the controversial Section 92A of the Copyright Amendment Act and start again. Section 92A has been scrapped.". This is fantastic news, and it's great that Prime Minister John Key has taken a stand on this important issue. This draconian and naïve law was originally championed by former-MP Labour's Judith Tizard. Now we need to help make some sensible copyright law that will protects artists and well as New Zealanders. Dunne: Common sense prevails on S.92A.
"Cabinet’s decision to abandon Section 92A of the Copyright Act and review it with the promise of an amendment is a victory for common sense," UnitedFuture leader and Ohariu MP Peter Dunne said today.
"If only the previous Minister had taken the advice of the select committee we may have had this whole situation cleared up well before now," said Mr Dunne.
"It is imperative that the Government’s review addresses the major flaws in S.92A, including responsibility for enforcement of the law resting unfairly with internet service providers."
"I consider that a much more independent adjudicator needs to be entrusted with the task of investigating accusations and enforcing penalties for the infringement of copyright."
"I urge the Government to work with the Creative Freedom Foundation, ISP’s, New Zealand artists and musicians, and other affected parties to produce a law that adequately addresses the responsibilities of copyright protection while providing users with the freedom of action they deserve."
"While the Government is undertaking the review of S.92A, I would also encourage it to look at section S.92C and the issue of webpage takedown."
"Let's clean this whole area up once and for all," said Mr Dunne.
